About Us

The Discovery Sailing Project exists to give young people the opportunity to develop through sail training.

On our voyages, we create a safe yet challenging environment where crews can build resilience, team work and persistence as they work to sail our physically and mentally demanding yachts. We do all this while tailoring the level of challenge to those on board and their ability, background and experience.

We create opportunities for leadership to emerge. By the end of a weekend, and certainly by the end of a week those with the interest and drive will be leading their own friends and crew members through sailing evolutions that they would not have experienced at the start of the cruise.

Through our watch leadership programme we create further opportunities for young people to formalise their experience through RYA qualifications, by helping with yacht maintenance and to continue to develop as leaders in sailing, acquiring both sailing and personal skills.

We deliver our mission through week and weekend cruises targeted at youth organisations and schools, and thorough participation in the Association of Sail Training Organisations’ (ASTO) organised events, both internationally and in the UK.

We are part of the Scout Association and are guided by the Scout Association values and method, (http://scouts.org.uk/about-us/key-policies/fundamentals-of-scouting/)

Integrity - We act with integrity; we are honest, trustworthy and loyal.

Respect - We have self-respect and respect for others.

Care - We support others and take care of the world in which we live.

Belief - We explore our faiths, beliefs and attitudes.

Cooperation - We make a positive difference; we cooperate with others and make friends.

All of our voyages are delivered in support of the Scout method. Scouting takes place when young people, in partnership with adults, work together based on the values of Scouting and:

enjoy what they are doing and have fun;

take part in activities indoors and outdoors;

learn by doing;

share in spiritual reflection;

take responsibility and make choices;

undertake new and challenging activities; and

make and live by their Promise.

We are committed to making sailing opportunities available to people with disabilities where our vessels permit. We have in the past worked with hearing and visually impaired young people and certainly are willing to accommodate such groups or individuals again. Give us a call to discuss.
